What the Carolina Panthers Must Do to Progress in 2025

The Carolina Panthers wrapped up the 2024 NFL campaign with a disappointing record of 5-12, marking another year without a winning season. However, there were some positives to take away, particularly in the latter half of the season, that provide some hope for the franchise moving forward. With a young core and David Canales as head coach, there’s an opportunity to make strides in 2025. To turn things around, the Panthers must focus on several key areas, including the defence, offensive consistency, smart offseason acquisitions, and coaching stability.

Fixing the Defence

One of the Panthers’ biggest weaknesses last season was their defence, which allowed a record 534 points, the most ever seen in a single NFL season. So, defensive upgrades must be a priority.

  • Defensive Line: While Derrick Brown remains an anchor, Carolina need help on the anterior. Acquiring a defensive tackle who can stop the run and generate pressure will be crucial.
  • Edge Rushers: The Panthers have struggled to stop opposing quarterbacks because key defensive players have departed. They need to bring in a dynamic pass rusher in free agency or the draft.
  • Secondary Strength: Carolina’s safeties and cornerbacks lack consistency, allowing too many big plays. Adding experienced defensive backs could help to tighten the pass defence.

Offensive Consistency and Protection for Bryce Young

Bryce Young is showing flashes of his potential, particularly after he became the starting quarterback. For him to take the next step, the Panthers must add protection for him and bolster their offensive line and receiving corps.

  • Improving Pass Protection: Robert Hunt and Damien Lewis’s arrival added strength to the interior offensive line, but the team still needs a dependable centre and better play from the tackles. If there isn’t adequate protection provided, Young will struggle to establish consistency.
  • Adding Playmakers: Adam Thielen is a solid slot receiver, but Carolina are still in need of a true No. 1 wideout. If they can find a dynamic receiver, Young will have a reliable target, and it will open up the offence.

Smart Offseason Moves

General Manager Dan Morgan faces the challenge of finding ways to upgrade the roster while managing salary cap limitations. Carolina must be strategic in free agency, targeting under-the-radar signings and potential trade acquisitions that provide value.

Sports betting markets seem to lean towards the Panthers remaining underdogs in the NFC South, but if they make the right moves in the offseason, expectations could shift. If they add impact players, they could go on and surprise many in 2025.

Coaching Stability

One of the few bright spots in 2024 was the leadership of Dave Canales. His ability, especially in connecting with players and developing quarterbacks, as seen with Geno Smith and Baker Mayfield, bodes well for the future and Bryce Young’s progression. Keeping the coaching staff intact will be essential to long-term success in Carolina.
